Who Frédéric Chopin was

Chopin left Warsaw in 1830, weeks before the November Uprising against Russian rule; the news reached him on the road and he never went home. In Paris he made his living teaching wealthy pupils and playing in salons rather than large halls, which suited both his temperament and his small tone. Nearly everything he wrote is for piano: mazurkas and polonaises rooted in Polish dance, nocturnes, ballades, the twenty-four preludes. His nine-year relationship with the novelist George Sand included a disastrous winter on Majorca in an unheated monastery. Tuberculosis killed him at thirty-nine. At his request his heart was taken to Warsaw, where it remains in the Church of the Holy Cross.
