Who Friedrich Nietzsche was

Nietzsche was appointed to a chair of classical philology at Basel at twenty-four, before finishing his doctorate. Chronic illness forced him out a decade later, and he spent the 1880s moving between boarding houses in Sils-Maria, Genoa and Turin, writing at speed: Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, On the Genealogy of Morals. He attacked the idea that moral values are given rather than made, traced them instead to history and psychology, and pressed the question of what remains once belief in God has drained away. In January 1889 he collapsed in Turin and never recovered his mind. His sister edited his notes into shapes he would have hated.
