“If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

Newton, letter to Robert Hooke, 1675

Who Isaac Newton was

Newton was a difficult, solitary man who did much of his best work at his mother's farm in Lincolnshire while Cambridge was closed for plague in 1665 and 1666. He developed the calculus, split white light with a prism to show it was composite, and began the thinking that became the law of universal gravitation. The Principia, published in 1687 at Halley's urging, gave the three laws of motion and showed that the same force holds an apple and a planet. He spent decades on alchemy and biblical chronology, quarrelled bitterly with Hooke and Leibniz, became Master of the Mint in 1699, and prosecuted coin clippers to the gallows.
