Who Mahatma Gandhi was

Gandhi qualified as a barrister in London and went to South Africa, where being thrown off a train at Pietermaritzburg for sitting in a first-class carriage set the course of his life. Over twenty-one years there he developed satyagraha, resistance that accepts suffering rather than inflicting it. Returning to India in 1915 he reorganised the Congress around mass participation, spun his own cloth, and led the 1930 Salt March, walking to the sea to break the salt monopoly. He fasted repeatedly to stop communal violence and to press for the rights of those he called Harijans. Independence came in 1947 with a partition he opposed. A Hindu nationalist shot him in Delhi in January 1948.
