“The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.”

Twain, note to the New York Journal, 1897

Who Mark Twain was

Samuel Clemens grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, apprenticed as a printer, and became a licensed Mississippi steamboat pilot before the Civil War closed the river. His pen name comes from the leadsman's call for two fathoms. A jumping frog story made him nationally known in 1865; Innocents Abroad made him rich. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, published in 1884, put an unschooled boy's voice at the centre of American prose and has been argued over ever since. He sank his money into the Paige typesetter, went bankrupt, and paid every creditor in full after a global lecture tour. His late writing, after the deaths of his wife and daughters, turned bleak.
