“I dream my painting and I paint my dream.”

Who Vincent van Gogh was

Van Gogh tried the art trade, teaching and lay preaching among Belgian miners before taking up painting seriously at twenty-seven. The early Dutch work is dark and heavy; Paris and then Arles changed everything, and the yellow house, the sunflowers and the wheat fields came in a rush. His plan for an artists' colony collapsed when Gauguin left after a violent quarrel in which Van Gogh cut off part of his own ear. He committed himself to the asylum at Saint-Rémy and painted The Starry Night from its window. He died in July 1890 of a gunshot wound. His brother Theo, who supported him throughout, died six months later.
