Marx trained in law and philosophy, was radicalised editing a Cologne newspaper, and was expelled from Prussia, then France, then Belgium. He and Friedrich Engels published The Communist Manifesto weeks before the revolutions of 1848. Settling in London in 1849, he spent years in the British Museum reading room working on Capital, the first volume of which appeared in 1867. It analyses commodities, labour power and surplus value, and argues that capitalist accumulation produces crises by its own internal logic. The family lived in poverty; several of his children died young, and Engels kept them afloat. Marx wrote journalism for the New-York Tribune to earn money.
