Who Lao Tzu was

Almost nothing about Lao Tzu is certain. The Han historian Sima Qian gives several conflicting accounts, the best known describing an archivist of the Zhou court who, disillusioned, rode west on an ox and was stopped at a mountain pass by a guard who asked him to write his teaching down before leaving. The result was the Tao Te Ching: five thousand characters on the Tao that cannot be named, on water wearing down stone, on wu wei — action that does not force. Modern scholars think the text was compiled over time from several hands. It became the founding book of Taoism and one of the most translated works in any language.
