“Listen to the reed, how it tells a tale, complaining of separations.”

Who Rumi was

Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi was born in Balkh, in present-day Afghanistan, and his family fled west ahead of the Mongols, settling in Konya in Anatolia. He inherited his father's position as a teacher of Islamic law and was already prominent when, in 1244, he met the wandering dervish Shams of Tabriz. Their intense friendship remade him; when Shams vanished, Rumi poured the loss into poetry. The Masnavi runs to some 25,000 couplets of stories, jokes and Qur'anic commentary that Persian speakers call the Qur'an in Persian tongue. The Divan-e Shams bears his friend's name instead of his own. The Mevlevi order, known for its turning ceremony, formed around his memory.
