“Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”

Jung, letter, 1959

Who Carl Jung was

Jung worked under Eugen Bleuler at the Burghölzli hospital in Zurich, where his word association experiments gave measurable evidence for unconscious complexes. Freud saw him as an heir; the friendship ended around 1913 over Jung's refusal to make sexuality the root of everything and his interest in religion and myth. In the crisis that followed he recorded his own visions in what became the Red Book, unpublished until 2009. His later work introduced the collective unconscious, archetypes such as the shadow and the anima, individuation as the task of the second half of life, and the introvert–extravert distinction that fed into modern personality testing. He lived and built at Bollingen on Lake Zurich.
